The municipality of Porteirinha in Northern Minas Gerais declared a state of emergency following the risk of a dam rupture at Barragem das Lajes due to intense rainfall in the area. The Federal Government has recognized this emergency condition, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. Residents in proximity to the dam were issued evacuation orders to ensure their safety as the authorities monitored the structural integrity of the dam.

Reports indicate that on Sunday, the Municipal Civil Defense advised that there was a partial breach of the dam structure, which led to significant flooding in nearby areas, particularly in the District of Serra Branca. According to Maurílio Tadeu Nunes, the local Civil Defense coordinator, this breach affected many homes, flooding them, which added to the urgency of the evacuation orders. The rainfall recorded in the region was approximately 120 millimeters over the weekend, exacerbating the situation substantially.

In addition to Serra Branca, other affected areas included the Community of Lajes, Barreiro, and various riverside localities, causing further damage and disruption. The local government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, is working to address the immediate needs of those displaced by the flooding and to assess the damages incurred.
