Decree in Belém controls fish trade during Holy Week
The city of Belém has implemented a decree regulating the fish trade to ensure adequate supply for the Holy Week period.
In Belém, the municipal government has introduced Decree No. 114.283/2026, which mandates that fish traders and transporters must issue a Fish Transport Guide (GTP) for transporting fish out of the city from March 19 to April 3. This regulation is aimed at managing the supply of fish to prevent shortages during the peak demand period surrounding Holy Week, which includes Good Friday.
According to André Cunha, the Secretary of the Municipal Secretariat for Economic Development (Sedcon), the initiative seeks to secure the internal supply of fish for the capital while also preventing uncontrolled price increases commonly seen during this time. Factors such as seasonal demand, high tides, and fishing restrictions typically lead to reduced fish availability and inflated prices.
The decree requires that fish be properly documented for transport, which is a measure aimed at stabilizing the local market and ensuring that residents of Belém have adequate access to fish during the Holy Week festivities. The initiative highlights the government's proactive approach to managing local resources and maintaining fair prices for consumers during a high-demand period.
