With the end of the closed fishing season, fishing is allowed for eight species in Santarém; check the list

The fishing sector in Santarém, Brazil, anticipates increased sales with the release of eight fish species for capture and sale as the closed fishing season comes to an end.

The fishing sector in Santarém, located in the western part of Pará, Brazil, is experiencing positive prospects with the conclusion of the closed fishing season. As of March 15, eight fish species have been authorized for fishing and commercialization, following a period intended to protect the reproductive cycle of local fish species. However, certain species such as tambaqui and acari remain protected until March 31, while the pirarucu will continue to be safeguarded until May 31.

Since March 15, eight species including Aracu, Branquinha, Curimatã, Fura-calça, Jatuarana, Mapará, Pacu, and Pirapitinga have been released for fishing. The Secretaria Municipal de Meio Ambiente (Semma) and the local fisher's colony Z-20 are actively monitoring and enforcing regulations to ensure compliance with the fishing protection measures. These ongoing efforts aim to safeguard species still under protection and maintain the ecological balance in the region.

Violators caught fishing or selling protected species will face legal consequences, including possible prosecution for illegal fishing and fines based on the weight of the illegally caught fish. These measures highlight the importance of sustainable fishing practices and regulatory compliance in the region's fishing industry, which is vital to the local economy and community.
