Europol shut down 373,000 Darknet sites
Europol has shut down 373,000 websites on the Darknet as part of a global crackdown on cybercrime.
In a significant global operation against cybercrime, Europol has announced the closure of over 373,000 websites on the Darknet. This operation, known as 'Operation Alice,' was a collaborative effort involving 23 countries and led by German authorities with support from Europol. The operation targeted one of the largest network of platforms on the Darknet, primarily featuring content related to child sexual exploitation and cybercrime services. The scale of the operation demonstrates the increasing international efforts to combat illegal activities online.
The operation took place between March 9 and March 19 and focused on a particular operator responsible for these illicit activities. During the investigation, authorities revealed the identities of 440 clients who had utilized the operator's services, marking a significant step towards accountability in online crimes. The revelations from 'Operation Alice' highlight how interconnected global law enforcement can successfully disrupt organized cybercrime networks that have previously evaded justice.
Catherine De Bolle, the head of Europol, emphasized the importance of international collaboration in tackling cybercrime, stating, "Operation Alice sends a clear message: there is nowhere to hide for criminals when the international law enforcement community works hand in hand." This statement reinforces the commitment of law enforcement agencies worldwide to protect vulnerable populations and uphold the rule of law against criminal enterprises operating in the shadows of the internet.
