[Breaking News] Arrest warrant for Lawyer Kim Yong-hyeon dismissed
The Seoul Central District Court dismissed an arrest warrant for lawyer Kwon Woo-hyun, who incited courtroom disorder during the trial of former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun.
The Seoul Central District Court dismissed the arrest warrant for Kwon Woo-hyun, the lawyer of former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who faced charges of causing disturbances in the courtroom during a trial related to sedition. The judge, Lee Ji-young, stated that there was insufficient evidence to justify the necessity for detention, considering the lawyer's residential and familial ties, his social bonds, and his demeanor during the questioning process.
Kwon had allegedly entered the courtroom without proper permission during a trial for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and challenged the court's authority by questioning the integrity of the judiciary, leading to unrest. Initially, both Kwon and another lawyer were sentenced to 15 days of detention for contempt of court, but their detention was ultimately unsuccessful as they failed to disclose their identities. This incident of courtroom disorder has sparked legal repercussions and further investigative actions against Kwon.
Following the courtroom incident, the court administration reported Kwon to the police for charges including contempt of court and defamation. An arrest warrant was subsequently sought by the police. It is noteworthy that while the arrest order against Kwon was dismissed, another lawyer involved in the incident, Lee Ha-sang, had already served his detention and was released recently. The developments in this case underscore ongoing tensions surrounding the conduct within South Korea's judicial system and its reception by legal representatives before the court.
