The detention of lawyer Kim Yong-hyun postponed for an additional 5 days due to courtroom disturbance

The enforcement of a 5-day detention order against lawyer Kwon Woo-hyun, issued for disturbances during a riot trial, has been cancelled by the court.

The enforcement of a detention order against lawyer Kwon Woo-hyun has fallen through as the Seoul Central District Court announced that it could not carry out the detention by midnight of the previous day. Kwon had received a 5-day detention sentence on December 4 of last year, with the enforcement deadline set for three months later, at midnight on the 5th. This case stems from an incident on November 19, where Kwon and another lawyer, Lee Ha-sang, were ordered to be detained for 15 days due to their disruptive behavior in the courtroom, defying a directive from the presiding judge. In a subsequent contempt trial, both lawyers refused to state their personal information, leading to their release from the Seoul Detention Center due to the absence of identifiable information.

During the contempt proceedings, Kwon made remarks questioning the court's authority and continued to disrupt the proceedings, which prompted the court to schedule additional contempt hearings that resulted in an extra 5-day order on December 4. On the 3rd of last month, after the conclusion of the trial surrounding former Minister Kim Yong-hyun's obstruction of public affairs, the court enforced a detention order on lawyer Lee, who was placed in the Seoul Detention Center and released on the 16th of last month. However, Kwon's detention, which had been ordered separately and was not enforced at that time due to his absence, could not be completed. A court representative noted that there are currently no clear regulations for extending the execution period of the detention order, resulting in the inability to implement it at this time.
