Festival brings terreiro cinema to Belém with free programming

The 1st edition of the ÀRÁ - Terreiro Cinema Festival opens in Belém, showcasing films that highlight the narratives of Afro-Brazilian communities.

The 1st edition of the ÀRÁ – Mostra de Cinema de Terreiro is set to take place in Belém, Brazil, starting with the screening of the film Aṣọ Ẹbí on Monday, October 23, at the Cine Líbero Luxardo. The festival aims to give visibility to the audiovisual productions created by individuals and communities from African-rooted terreiro traditions, which have often been marginalized in mainstream media. Following the film screening, there will be a conversation with the film's team and cast, fostering a community dialogue around the work and its significance.

Luana Andrade, the festival's organizer, emphasized that the initiative is not just about showing films but also about establishing terreiro cinema as a distinct cultural expression. She expressed the festival's goals to create favorable conditions for the existence, circulation, and strengthening of these filmmakers in a landscape where their narratives have historically been underrepresented. This endeavor not only seeks to entertain but also to educate audiences about the rich cultural heritage of the terreiro communities.

The festival is significant as it broadens access to these unique narratives and recognizes the terreiros as vital places for knowledge, culture, and resistance. By supporting and promoting the stories from these communities, the ÀRÁ festival contributes to a greater awareness and appreciation of Afro-Brazilian culture, aiming to challenge the traditional media narrative and introduce audiences to diverse perspectives within Brazilian cinema.
