Fire in Daejeon Factory Contained, But Risk of Collapse Remains... 14 People Still Missing

A fire at a car parts manufacturing plant in Daejeon has been contained, but 14 employees remain uncontacted and the building risks collapsing.

A significant fire broke out at a car parts manufacturing company in Daejeon, South Korea, on the afternoon of the 20th, putting multiple lives at risk and complicating rescue efforts due to structural concerns. The local fire department managed to contain the fire, which led to injuries of 55 individuals, but the search for 14 employees who are currently unaccounted for is hindered by fears of potential building collapse. Efforts are being assessed for nighttime search operations following the incident, as officials aim to locate the missing workers who are believed to have been in a second-floor break room at the time of the fire.

The fire started around 7:12 p.m. and resulted in significant damage, particularly to the prefabricated structure where the incident began. Fire Chief Nam Deuk-woo indicated that while they have managed to extinguish over 98% of the fire, the building’s condition poses a serious threat to rescue teams, as the interior remains dangerous to navigate. Specialized firefighting robots have been deployed to the first floor for searches, while further assessments are being made on the safety of sending in human rescue crews. The significant risks stem from the building's construction and the presence of hazardous materials, including over 100 kilograms of sodium, which could pose explosive risks if exposed to water.

The affected establishment did not have mandatory sprinkler installations across the entire facility, with only a few required in specific areas. The operational status of these systems during the incident has yet to be confirmed. Investigations into the rapid spread of the flames and the overall incident are set to take place, focusing on potential contributing factors such as available combustible materials and the exact cause of ignition. The uncertainty surrounding the missing individuals and the precarious state of the building adds a layer of urgency to the ongoing emergency response efforts in Daejeon.
