Police arrest suspects in illegal mining and seize machinery in Rondônia

An operation in Rondônia led to the arrest of suspects involved in illegal cassiterite extraction with machinery also confiscated by authorities.

An integrated operation conducted by the Military Police of Rondônia has dismantled an illegal cassiterite mining operation in the Bom Futuro district of Ariquemes. Although the police did not disclose the exact number of arrests or the machinery seized, the operation involved multiple units, including the Environmental Police Battalion and Special Police Operations Battalion, highlighting the seriousness of the issue at hand.

The investigation was initiated following a complaint regarding irregular mining activities in the Bom Futuro area. The suspects claimed to have environmental permits associated with a cooperative; however, officials from the State Department of Environmental Development (Sedam) confirmed that the activities were occurring outside the licensed area. This points to significant environmental and regulatory violations that could have broader implications for local ecosystems and community health.

In addition to the main operation, the Special Police Operations Battalion uncovered other unauthorized mining activities in the area, all lacking the necessary permits. As a result of these discoveries, the seized equipment has been transported to the BPA's yard, indicating a concerted effort by the authorities to combat illegal mining practices that threaten both natural resources and public safety in the region.
