Corinth Canal: Goal to Open in July

The Corinth Canal's restoration project aims to be completed by the end of June to address safety concerns due to previous landslides.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in Greece, Christos Dimas, conducted a site visit at the Corinth Canal restoration project, highlighting significant milestones achieved in the restoration work. Key developments include strengthening the foundation of the southern pier of the sewage transfer bridge and excavating the canal's slopes to mitigate risks associated with past landslides. This restoration is crucial to ensure safe and uninterrupted operations of the canal, an important waterway for transport.

Dimas emphasized the project's technical challenges, which span approximately one kilometer in length and are necessary for the security of canal navigation. The project has already seen progress in its foundational work and slope excavations, essential components aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. In light of these advancements, the ministry plans to double work shifts to accelerate the project’s completion by the end of June, aiming for the canal to be reopened in July.

The Corinth Canal is not only vital for local marine navigation but also holds significant economic importance for Greece, facilitating trade and transport between the Aegean and Ionian seas. Effective restoration of the canal’s slopes will help prevent operational disruptions and enhance the safety of vessels passing through, thereby reinforcing the canal's role in regional trade routes.
