Police Statistics for 2025: Huge Increase in Sexual Violence – and Almost Three Times as Many Murders

The 2025 crime statistics for Munich show a slight decrease in overall crime, but a significant increase in sexual violence and homicides.

In 2025, the total number of crimes reported in Munich saw a slight decrease from the previous year, dropping from 100,338 to 98,478, which corresponds to a reduction of 1.8 percent. This decline is, however, less than the overall trend observed in the Free State of Bavaria, where the crime rate decreased by 3.3 percent according to Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann. Despite this slight overall reduction, the statistics reveal disturbing increases in specific violent crimes, particularly sexual offenses and homicides, which have risen alarmingly in the city.

Police President Thomas Hampel noted that of all reported crimes, 62.9 percent were solved, a 2.6 percent increase from the previous year. This improved clearance rate is seen as a positive outcome of effective investigative work by law enforcement officials. However, critics point out that both the safety report and the police crime statistics present a limited picture of crime in Munich, as they only account for incidents that prompted police action.

The implications of these statistics are significant for public safety and city governance. The notable rise in violent crimes, particularly sexual assaults and murders, raises critical concerns about the effectiveness of crime prevention measures in the city. Policymakers and community leaders may need to reassess current strategies and implement more robust interventions to address these rising challenges, highlighting the ongoing need for public discourse on safety and security in urban areas.
