Ghana: Northern Ghana Faces Rising Climate Threats - Bewda

A local non-profit in northern Ghana calls for stronger cooperation between communities and the government to combat the impacts of climate change.

The Belim Wusa Development Agency (BEWDA), a local non-profit organization, has emphasized the urgent need for enhanced collaboration between communities and government to address the escalating climate threats facing northern Ghana. During a recent workshop in Zebilla, Bawku West District, EBWDA's Executive Secretary, Peter Asaal, highlighted the country's policies to combat climate change but warned that without active community engagement, these efforts are likely to be insufficient.

The workshop aimed to educate participants on the significant climate challenges, including worsening droughts, rising temperatures, and extreme heat, which have already begun to detrimentally affect water systems, public health, and food security in the region. Mr. Asaal pointed out that these issues are increasingly threatening the livelihoods of residents in the northern areas of Ghana, emphasizing the necessity for community mobilization and proactive measures to protect vulnerable populations.

BEWDA's initiatives are set to begin in April 2026, focusing on five northern regions, including Kassena-Nankana West and the Kassena-Nankana Municipality. As part of this effort, a climate vulnerability assessment has already been conducted to inform the strategies and actions needed to combat the climate crisis effectively. The workshop sought to engage citizens actively and encourage them to participate in ongoing climate action efforts.
