Swedish energy company aims to build six modular reactors near Gävle

A Swedish energy firm plans to apply for permission to construct six small modular reactors close to Gävle, with a total capacity of approximately 300 MW.

The Swedish energy company Blykalla intends to seek approval this year for the construction of six small modular reactors near Gävle. These reactors are projected to have a combined capacity of about 300 MW, sufficient to meet the electricity needs of approximately 150,000 households. The facility is planned for the Norrsundet area, located around 25 kilometers from the city of Gävle, with an anticipated completion date in the first half of 2030.

Blykalla’s CEO, Jakob Stedman, emphasized that the decision to proceed in Norrsundet is based on favorable conditions and the growing demand for stable, fossil-free electricity, which would facilitate industrial development. This initiative aligns with Sweden's ongoing transition towards sustainable energy, as the current electricity production in the country is already predominantly fossil fuel-free, comprising 40% hydropower, 29% nuclear energy, and 21% wind energy.

The project will require approval from several regulatory entities, as well as the Gävle municipality, before it can commence. The Swedish government has ongoing plans to increase the role of nuclear energy even further, presenting opportunities for developers like Blykalla to contribute to the nation's energy goals while addressing the escalating energy demands of the future.
