Protesters block BR-163 in both directions, causing kilometers of congestion
A protest by the Landless Workers' Movement (MST) has completely blocked BR-163 in Campo Grande, resulting in significant traffic congestion.
On the morning of Friday, October 20, a protest organized by the Landless Workers' Movement (MST) brought traffic on BR-163 in Campo Grande to a standstill, with approximately 150 participants blocking the highway in both directions. The blockage, centered at kilometer 463, resulted in a significant traffic jam, with reports indicating congestion extending about 3 kilometers in the southbound lanes and 1 kilometer in the northbound lanes. Government authorities have responded with the presence of Federal Highway Police (PRF) who are currently negotiating with protesters to clear the road, though no timeline has been provided for when normal traffic flow might resume.
In response to the blockage, the highway concessionaire, Motiva Pantanal, has deployed teams to the area to assist in rerouting vehicles and providing information to drivers. Currently, only emergency vehicles, such as ambulances, are being allowed to pass through the obstructed stretch of the highway. As the situation develops, the lack of a clear resolution raises concerns about the disruption of travel and transport in the region, particularly for those who rely on BR-163 for commuting and transportation.
Motorists have been advised to seek alternative routes to avoid the congested area. Specifically, drivers heading north are directed to take a detour at kilometer 461, linking them to MS-040, while those heading south have also been given guidance on alternative pathways. This protest, indicative of broader social issues in Brazil pertaining to land reform and the rights of rural workers, highlights the ongoing tensions faced by the MST and the challenging dynamics between government authorities and social movements.
