Establishment of a New Organization Aiming for a Healthy Information Space in the Age of AI: Symposium at Keio University

A symposium at Keio University highlighted the establishment of a new organization focused on creating a healthy information environment amidst the challenges posed by generative AI and misinformation.

On the 20th, Keio University's X Dignity Center held a symposium to discuss the establishment of a new organization aimed at promoting a healthy information space in the era of AI. With the rise of generative AI, which is facilitating the spread of misinformation, the new organization intends to form a network that includes universities, media outlets, social media companies, advertising firms, and creators to evaluate reliable news producers and operating platforms. They plan to engage in projects that foster communication among journalists, students, and creators while also collaborating with other universities on research related to digital space.

During the symposium, the role of media in the AI era was debated, with speaker Miki Niwa, a second-year student and editor-in-chief of the University of Tokyo Newspaper, stating that AI merely abstracts public opinion and that human ability lies in listening to individual voices. Professor Tatsuhiko Yamamoto, co-representative of the X Dignity Center, expressed the intention to broaden the new organization’s network, emphasizing their commitment to addressing the pressing issues of misinformation and ethical practices in the digital realm.

In addition to the formation of this new organization, five guiding principles for creating a healthy digital space were announced under the "Let’s Think About Digital Ethics Declaration!" These guidelines were presented in accessible language and illustrated visuals, aiming to enhance digital literacy among content creators, journalists, and social media managers. Discussions at the event highlighted the importance of balanced execution of these principles and leveraging individual strengths for literacy education, underscoring the necessity of ethical behavior in navigating digital landscapes in the future.
