Former candidate for the Seimas, public information creator A. Drižius, will be tried for defamation
A. Drižius, a former candidate for the Seimas and public information creator, faces trial for allegedly spreading defamatory information through media outlets.
A. Drižius, a former political candidate and public information worker, is set to face trial for defamation based on allegations that he collaborated with a former spouse of a businessman to intentionally demean and belittle the victim. The Lithuanian Prosecutor's Office has indicated that the preliminary investigation gathered sufficient evidence that Drižius used public media to publish articles and videos containing false and defamatory statements about the injured party.
The investigation reviewed a total of 32 defamatory articles and videos published between January 6, 2021, and September 11, 2024, in the media outlets "Laisvas laikraštis" and "Laisvas info." These materials allegedly contained knowingly false statements about various crimes purportedly committed by the victim, contributing to a narrative that inaccurately portrayed the individual's character and life.
This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the misuse of public information channels for reputational harm in Lithuania. The implications of this trial could set precedents for how defamatory statements are treated in the media landscape, especially regarding the accountability of public figures and media creators in disseminating potentially harmful information against individuals.
