Left Alliance Municipal Councilor Sentenced for Defamation in Merikarvia

A municipal councilor from Merikarvia, Jorma Tuppurainen, has been convicted of defamation for disparaging local entrepreneurs in online writings.

Jorma Tuppurainen, a municipal councilor representing the Left Alliance in Merikarvia, Finland, has received a conviction for defamation from the Satakunta District Court. The prosecutor filed charges against Tuppurainen regarding online writings made between 2022 and 2024, where he accused two local entrepreneurs of engaging in shady business practices. The accusations included calling the entrepreneurs fraudsters, which led to this legal action against him.

During police interrogation, Tuppurainen acknowledged that he had posted comments about one entrepreneur online, leading him to assume that the entrepreneur was not paying bills. Despite this admission, he denied committing any criminal offense. Ultimately, the court ruled that Tuppurainen had indeed committed defamation, imposing a penalty of 50 daily fines amounting to 1,200 euros based on his income.

In addition to the fines, Tuppurainen is required to compensate each of the two entrepreneurs 6,000 euros for their suffering, along with accrued interest. Furthermore, he must pay one of the entrepreneurs an additional 800 euros for lost income. This case highlights the legal consequences of public disparagement and the responsibilities held by public officials when voicing opinions about business practices in their communities.
