Colombia: Torrential rain triggers severe flooding in Facatativá, over 1,000 affected

Severe flooding in Facatativá, Colombia, has displaced over 1,000 residents due to torrential rain.

Torrential rain in Colombia has caused significant flooding in the town of Facatativá, with over 1,000 residents affected as rivers and streams overflowed. Early morning flooding reached water levels exceeding one meter in homes, prompting emergency responses from local authorities, including the fire department and the Red Cross. Across the Cundinamarca region, at least 14 distinct incidents of flooding were reported, illustrating the extent of the crisis.

Emergency services have been actively working throughout the day to manage the situation, deploying pumps and evacuation teams to assist residents. Many individuals were relocated to temporary shelters where essential supplies such as food and basic necessities are being distributed. The situation remains precarious as local authorities monitor the ongoing weather conditions, which may bring additional rainfall and heightened risks of landslides due to already saturated ground.

Governor Jorge Emilio Rey emphasized the seriousness of the flooding and the need for urgent action to protect affected communities. The national weather agency IDEAM has warned that further rainstorms could exacerbate the current crisis, compounding the challenges faced by emergency responders and increasing the risk of further evacuations in the region, as well as potential landslides in the nearby Andean areas that have been weakened by the excessive rainfall.
