Director Lim Da-seul's 'Tongue' Wins Jury Award at SXSW Midnight Short Film Competition, a First for Korean Cinema

The short film 'Tongue' by director Lim Da-seul has won the Jury Award at the SXSW Midnight Short Film Competition, making it the first Korean film to achieve this honor.

Lim Da-seul's short film 'Tongue' has made history as it received the Jury Award at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival's Midnight Short Film Competition, marking the first time a Korean film has achieved this accolade. The announcement was made by the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival on the 20th. The SXSW festival, held in Austin, Texas, is globally recognized for its integration of music, film, and interactive content, and this year's event celebrated its 33rd iteration from March 12 to 18.

'Tongue' is a horror-comedy film that explores the imagination of a wife who wants to silence her incessantly talking husband. It was previously recognized at various Korean film festivals, including last year's Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival where it received the Best Short Film Award. The film's unique perspective, delivered through a wife who does not speak a single word, has been commended for its sharp satire and selective portrayal of domestic issues, which resonated with festival jury members.

The SXSW jury highlighted the film's engaging storytelling, impressive music, meticulous sound design, and stellar performances as key reasons for its selection. Director Lim Da-seul, born in 1991, studied film directing at Kaywon University of Art and Design and has previously directed notable short films such as 'Mari' (2012) and 'Damas' (2013). 'Tongue' continues to underline the growing recognition and evolution of Korean cinema on international platforms.
