Art from Cans and Shells at the 'Art of Survival. Zedelgem' Exhibition in the War Museum

An exhibition at the War Museum showcases unique art and ornaments created by Latvian prisoners of war using materials such as tin cans and cartridge casings.

The exhibition titled 'Art of Survival. Zedelgem' at the War Museum highlights the resourcefulness of Latvian prisoners of war who created art with limited materials available in their camps, including tin cans, cartridge casings, and planks. Among their creations is a miniature representation of the Freedom Monument, fashioned in 1945 to commemorate the anniversary of Latvia's independence declaration. Such works reveal the poignant creativity and resilience of individuals subjected to harsh conditions.

Although the materials used in these artworks were humble, the resulting pieces display exquisite craftsmanship, particularly evident in the finely detailed wooden boxes adorned with Latvian ornaments and miniature sculptures. The exhibition serves as a powerful testament to the human spirit, suggesting that the desire to create beauty transcends even the most challenging circumstances, enabling individuals to maintain their dignity and national identity while in captivity.

Inese Gฤtere, one of the exhibition's curators, notes that this presentation offers a less conventional perspective on the legionnaires. Instead of focusing solely on the political implications often associated with the topic, especially in relation to March 16th, this exhibition allows for a more personal and humane examination of their experience, shedding light on the artistic expression that emerged even in times of great adversity.
