Gallery: The new exhibition at the maritime museum showcases the museum's art collection
A new exhibition titled 'The Call of the Sea: The Art Collection of the Estonian Maritime Museum' has opened, celebrating the work of various artists inspired by maritime themes.
The Estonian Maritime Museum in Lennusadam has launched a new exhibition called 'The Call of the Sea: The Art Collection of the Estonian Maritime Museum', which pays tribute to artists from different generations and regions who answered the call of the sea with their brush strokes. This collection, which began in the 1930s when the museum was established, includes not only models and photographs but also paintings that document maritime life in Estonia.
According to curator and art collection keeper Laura Jamsja, the museum prioritizes art that serves as a visual document or a historical source, rather than pieces aimed solely at captivating the audience with beauty or color. The purpose of the collection is to convey the story of Estonian maritime history, which the museum strives to tell and preserve through the artworks it collects.
Today, the collection, which consists of more than 900 pieces, is notable within the Estonian art scene as it features many artists who were not professional artists but were instead individuals who pursued maritime careers. This unique aspect of the collection provides insight into the relationship between Estonia's maritime heritage and its artistic expressions, allowing visitors to appreciate the personal connections many of these artists had with the sea.
