NESREA shuts Oyo plant over environmental violations
NESREA has closed a Bond Chemicals factory in Oyo State due to environmental violations concerning untreated industrial waste discharge.
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has taken decisive action by sealing a Bond Chemicals factory in Oyo State, Nigeria, due to serious environmental infractions. This enforcement measure was enacted following numerous public complaints about the factory's discharge of untreated wastewater, characterized by a strong offensive odor. NESREA's Assistant Director of Press, Nwamaka Ejiofor, confirmed that these complaints were substantiated through a compliance inspection conducted earlier this year.
The February inspection revealed that the factory was operating without a functional effluent treatment plant, which is a critical component for properly managing industrial waste in compliance with national regulations. As a result, the factory's operations were deemed a significant violation of environmental standards, and it was reported that untreated wastewater was being released directly into the surrounding environment. This practice raised serious health and ecological concerns, highlighting the necessity for stringent compliance with environmental laws to protect communal health and wellbeing.
Previously, NESREA had notified the facility regarding these infractions, instructing them to halt their polluting activities, install a proper effluent treatment system, and secure the requisite regulatory approvals. The agency's strong action underscores its commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and ensuring that industries are held accountable for their impact on the environment, serving as a critical step toward safeguarding Nigeria's ecological integrity.
