European Union countries must be involved in the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz, believes Ijabs
Ivars Ijabs, a Member of the European Parliament, emphasizes the need for EU countries to participate in unblocking the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting Europe's significant dependence on oil and gas imports through this route.
Ivars Ijabs, a Member of the European Parliament from Latvia, has stressed the critical importance of involving European Union (EU) countries in efforts to unblock the Strait of Hormuz. In an interview with Latvia's television program "Rīta panorāma," Ijabs pointed out that Europe is the most dependent region on oil and gas that pass through this vital waterway. He remarked that the issue of engagement is currently on the table and needs to be addressed urgently due to the geopolitical implications.
Ijabs further commented on the lack of substantial arguments in the criticisms directed at the EU and NATO by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding this situation. He noted that when the conflict started, Europe and NATO were not sufficiently consulted, implying a disconnect in collaboration among Western allies. He urged for rational engagement from the U.S. side, emphasizing that partnership is essential for addressing challenges rather than provoking conflicts.
Addressing concerns about the EU's preparedness for prolonged instability in the Middle East, Ijabs expressed skepticism about the EU's current level of readiness. He indicated that the EU is already facing economic stagnation and is not equipped to handle the security and economic repercussions that could arise from ongoing conflicts in the region. This highlights the urgent need for strategic planning and cooperation among nations to mitigate potential impacts on European stability and security.
