MEP Ijabs: The EU must get involved in the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz
Latvian MEP Ijabs emphasizes the EU's deep reliance on oil and gas from the Strait of Hormuz and discusses the need for diplomatic and military engagement.
Latvian Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Ijabs has highlighted the European Union's considerable dependency on oil and gas supplies that transit through the Strait of Hormuz. He elaborated on the vital importance of this region for Europe's energy security while questioning the means by which the EU should involve itself. Ijabs pointed out that the discussion involves not only diplomatic engagement with regional partners but also the potential for military assistance, aspects that are presently on the table for consideration.
Additionally, Ijabs responded to criticisms from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Europe's involvement in the region, stating that such criticisms lack substantial arguments. He noted that Trump has not sought advice from Europe or NATO regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, signifying a disconnect in transatlantic relations over security concerns. Ijabs’ comments reflect a broader sentiment within the EU about the need for a more cohesive strategy regarding its security and energy policies in volatile regions.
Lastly, Ijabs raised alarm over the EU's preparedness for prolonged instability in the Middle East and its potential impacts on both security and economics. He stressed that the EU is not currently ready to address such long-term instability and underscored the urgent need for Europe to reduce its overwhelming dependence on fossil fuels. He advocated for a shift towards renewable energy sources, including nuclear energy, signifying a move towards a more sustainable and self-reliant energy future for Europe.
