"Wet rag to the face," says the forestry association โ€“ authorities suddenly tightened the conditions for environmental support

The Finnish Forest Centre announced immediate tightening of criteria for environmental support for forest owners due to insufficient funds to meet demand.

The Finnish Forest Centre has communicated a swift modification in the eligibility criteria for environmental support, affecting forest owners across the country. This change comes as the available funding is insufficient to accommodate all applicants, with last yearโ€™s budget of over 12 million euros falling short of the estimated 15โ€“20 million euros needed to meet the surging demand for forest protection. As a result, the authorities have categorized funding to only target forest areas that possess significant natural values, significantly limiting the scope of support.

With the new criteria effective immediately, applications submitted before March 18 will still be processed under the old rules, allowing those who acted swiftly to secure support for their projects. Conversely, any applications received after this date will only be considered if they pertain to habitats of particular importance as outlined in the Forest Act, as well as first-class sites under the Metso program. These measures signify a shift towards prioritizing high-value ecological areas while potentially discouraging smaller, less critical conservation efforts.

This decision has sparked criticism from stakeholders within the forestry community, who feel that the restrictions not only hurt individual forest owners but may also impede broader environmental goals. The forestry association claims that the sudden policy change feels like being hit by a "wet rag to the face," which underscores their discontent with how the process is being managed. As demand for environmental protection in Finland continues to grow, this development raises concerns about the future of forest conservation and the balance between financial resources and ecological responsibility.
