Jaguar rescued from canal of hydroelectric plant in Mato Grosso
A jaguar was rescued from a canal at the PCH Beleza hydroelectric plant in Brazil after a coordinated effort involving firefighters and environmental authorities.
A jaguar was rescued on the afternoon of Thursday, the 19th, from a canal of the PCH Beleza hydroelectric plant located in Juscimeira, approximately 160 km from Cuiabá in the state of Mato Grosso. This rescue operation involved the military firefighters, the environmental police, and the State Secretariat for the Environment. The animal had to be sedated due to signs of hypothermia, as uncontrolled sedation could cause severe harm or even death.
Marks at the scene indicated that the jaguar had made attempts to escape the canal on its own, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The rescue team employed a cleaning platform from the plant to lift the feline without inflicting injuries, given the need for careful management due to nearby rural settlements with pedestrian, cyclist, and school bus traffic. The canal is crucial as it directs water to the hydroelectric power plant, which is situated near the São Lourenço River's tributary.
Following its rescue, the jaguar is expected to be returned to its natural habitat in the region. This incident underscores the importance of wildlife protection and the intricacies of human development impacting animal habitats. Effective response and cooperation among different authorities showcased a successful model for similar future situations involving wildlife at risk.
