IPL: 'Baby Malinga' ready to roar after fitness, opponents in trouble!

Sri Lanka Cricket has declared Matheesha Pathirana, also known as 'Baby Malinga', fit to play in the IPL, providing a significant boost for Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the tournament.

Ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) received encouraging news as star bowler Matheesha Pathirana, famously known as 'Baby Malinga', has been declared fit by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Following some concerns about his fitness, SLC Secretary Bandula Dissanayake confirmed that Pathirana has successfully completed his rehabilitation and has been issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) to participate in the tournament. It remains to be seen when exactly he will join the KKR squad.

The acquisition of Pathirana by KKR for ₹18 crores was a significant investment, especially after he suffered an injury during a T20 World Cup match against Australia. After having bowled four overs, he had to leave the field due to a calf injury, which raised doubts about his availability for the IPL season. Dissanayake mentioned in conversation with PTI that KKR would assess his match fitness prior to his return, but the positive news of his fitness clearance boosts KKR's bowling lineup immensely.

This development is not only vital for KKR but also poses serious challenges for their opponents in the IPL. Matheesha Pathirana's bowling skills, which drew comparisons to the legendary Lasith Malinga, could potentially turn the tide in matches, making him a key player to watch this season. The anticipation will now be on how quickly he can reintegrate into the team and contribute to KKR's quest for victory in the tournament.
