The restoration of four historic bells from the Cathedral of Sé in Mariana, Minas Gerais, has been completed, enhancing their safety and sound quality for liturgical use.
The restoration of four bells belonging to the Cathedral of Sé, located in the historic center of Mariana, Minas Gerais, has been successfully completed this week. The restoration project, which began on February 10, involved an extensive recovery of components dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The work included strengthening the hardware, making technical adjustments, and preserving the original characteristics of the bells, ensuring they could be safely returned to liturgical use.
The aim of the revitalization was not only to ensure the bells are safe but also to improve their sound quality. In an interview with TV Globo, the bell ringer Leonardo Francisco Santos Ribeiro explained that the restoration process addressed various aspects, from safety to enhancing the timbre of the bells, including the regulation of the clappers and alignment of the counterweights. This comprehensive approach has ensured that this significant ensemble of bells has returned to full integrity and can be used appropriately during liturgical services.
This restoration is part of a larger effort to recover the artistic ensemble of the church, which began in 2016. According to the Archdiocese, this marks the final phase of the restoration project, signifying an important step in preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the Cathedral of Sé and enhancing its role in the community.
