Originally inaugurated in 1630, the church has undergone various renovations since its establishment. The most notable renovation occurred in 1701; however, in recent years, incorrect materials, such as unsuitable paints, were used in repairs that did not respect the historical integrity of the church. The current restoration endeavor aims to rectify these past mistakes and restore the church to its authentic state, thereby honoring its heritage and cultural significance in Brazil.

The church has been listed as a historical heritage site by the State of São Paulo since 2016, highlighting its cultural significance. This restoration is not just about architectural preservation but also serves as a reminder of Brazil's rich history and the contributions of its saints, like Frei Galvão, to the nation's cultural and spiritual identity.
