Wounded marsupial rescued in neighborhood of Manaus

A wounded cuíca-lanosa was rescued by the Ipaam in the Chapada neighborhood of Manaus.

A cuíca-lanosa, or woolly opossum, was rescued on September 18 in the Chapada neighborhood of Manaus after being found injured and struggling to move. The animal, a nocturnal species that is typically elusive, was discovered in the grounds of a municipal agency, prompting action from local wildlife authorities. The Institute of Environmental Protection of Amazonas (Ipaam) reported that the animal's rescue was initiated when it was spotted near one of their sectors.

José Barbosa, a maintenance artisan who first encountered the injured marsupial, observed that it was limping and appeared quite weak. He took precautions by placing the animal under a tree for its safety while seeking assistance. The incident highlights the efforts of the local community and wildlife management agencies in addressing the welfare of injured wildlife.

The cuíca-lanosa is known for its nocturnal habits, making sightings rare. Following the rescue, the Fauna Management Department (GFAU) took charge of the situation, adhering to established technical protocols for the capture and care of wild animals. This event not only underscores the importance of wildlife conservation efforts in urban areas but also raises awareness of the challenges faced by local wildlife in urban environments like Manaus.
