ANP orders Petrobras to resume canceled fuel auctions this week

The ANP has instructed Petrobras to restart canceled auctions for gasoline and diesel following market monitoring measures amid supply concerns.

The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) in Brazil has mandated that Petrobras resume fuel auctions for gasoline and diesel that were unexpectedly canceled earlier this week. This decision is part of a broader initiative announced on Thursday to ensure closer monitoring of the fuel market amid ongoing supply challenges. While the agency currently indicates that there are no significant restrictions on the country's fuel supply, there are significant concerns regarding the supply volatility expected in April due to reduced private sector imports.

The canceled auctions were set for delivery in the upcoming month, with Petrobras planning to auction off approximately 95 million liters of gasoline and 70 million liters of diesel. Although these volumes represent a relatively small fraction (3% for gasoline and 1.4% for diesel) of the projected sales for April 2025, they are nonetheless deemed critical. Distributors have expressed that Petrobras's involvement in the market is crucial for maintaining a stable supply, especially as the company may need to take on a greater role in domestic fuel provision next month.

This development comes at a time when the Brazilian fuel market is facing uncertainties and potential shortages due to various factors, including reduced import volumes. The ANP's decision to reinstate these auctions signals an attempt to mitigate potential supply issues and bolster the country's gasoline and diesel availability, highlighting the ongoing challenges in managing Brazil's energy resources effectively.
