Police arrest man who invaded ex-partner's building with a gas can and shot 20 times at apartment door
A man in Recife was arrested after invading his ex-partner's building and firing 20 shots at her apartment door while threatening her.
The Civil Police of Brazil arrested André Maia Oliveira, a 47-year-old system analyst, for invading the building of his ex-girlfriend and firing 20 shots at her apartment door. The dramatic events occurred in Recife, where he also made death threats to the victim. After remaining a fugitive for over 24 hours following the attempted feminicide, Oliveira turned himself in at the Casa Amarela Police Station in northern Recife later that day.
During his escape, Oliveira reportedly contacted his ex-partner, causing her further distress and fear. Upon his arrest, he was immediately transferred to the Women's Police Station in the Rosarinho neighborhood and is now set to undergo evaluation at the Centro de Observação e Triagem Professor Everardo Luna (Cotel), a facility in the Grande Recife area. Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding his arrest despite inquiries from local media.
This incident raises significant concerns about domestic violence and feminicide in Brazil, particularly in the context of escalating threats and violence against women. The quick response by the police highlights a commitment to addressing such crimes, but it also underscores the ongoing challenges faced by victims of domestic abuse in seeking protection and justice. Understanding the motive behind Oliveira's actions and ensuring the safety of the victim will be crucial moving forward.
