Ultraskier Teemu Virtanen has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing a new world record for the 24-hour skiing distance, covering an incredible 475.88 kilometers at the Lahti ski stadium. This significant achievement was officially recognized by Guinness World Records after a lengthy verification process that took two years due to technical difficulties and the need for precise measurement of the final meters. Virtanen broke the previous record held by Hans Mäenpää, who had achieved a distance of 472.007 kilometers, with just 13 minutes to spare during his record-setting performance in March 2024.
The arduous journey to claim this world record was not only physically demanding but also mentally taxing for Virtanen, who expressed his anxiety about meeting the world record criteria and the pressure of ensuring everything went smoothly. His determination to perform at the highest level was palpable, as he emphasized the tightness of the competition in achieving such a feat. This world record adds to the growing legacy of Finnish athletes in the sport of skiing, demonstrating their status as formidable competitors on the international stage.
In addition to Virtanen's achievement, March 2023 also saw another significant world record when Susanna Ylinen set the women's 24-hour skiing record with a distance of 388.78 kilometers. These accomplishments highlight not only the individual talents of these athletes but also Finland's rich tradition and commitment to winter sports, as they continue to excel and push the boundaries in skiing disciplines.
