50 students participate in composting and waste treatment workshop in Santarém
Public school students in Santarém engaged in a composting workshop aimed at establishing a school garden and promoting sustainable practices.
On Wednesday, October 18, students from the State School Jader Fontenelle Barbalho in the Jaderlândia neighborhood of Santarém participated in a composting and waste treatment workshop organized by the state government of Pará and conducted by Emater. The workshop gathered 50 students with the primary goal of implementing a sustainable garden on school premises, where they learned about composting techniques, the use of organic fertilizers, and repurposing waste materials as part of the project named 'Plantando Saberes.' During the workshop held at the Organic Waste Treatment Unit (UTRO) of the Federal University of Western Pará (Ufopa), students experienced hands-on how organic waste can be transformed into fertilizer. The practical approach provided students like Lucas Mascarenhas with insights on sustainability, emphasizing the importance of reducing waste and fostering a more creative mindset towards minimizing unnecessary waste. This workshop not only aimed at improving the school's environmental footprint but also sought to instill a sense of responsibility and innovation among young students. The initiative reflects a broader trend within Brazilian educational programs to incorporate sustainability into the curriculum, fulfilling the dual purpose of education and environmental awareness. By engaging students in sustainable practices, the program aspires to create future guardians of the environment who are informed and motivated to contribute positively to their community. Such workshops play a critical role in shaping the attitudes of the younger generation towards environmental conservation.
