Beach Project promotes workshops to define rules for the beaches of Fernando de Noronha

The Beach Project in Fernando de Noronha has started workshops with residents to discuss the management of the island's beaches.

The Beach Project, a collaborative initiative by state and federal governments in Brazil, has commenced a series of workshops this week aimed at defining rules and actions for the use of the beaches in Fernando de Noronha. These workshops, which will run until Friday, October 20, involve local residents and focus specifically on discussing regulations for the beaches located within the Environmental Protection Area (APA) from Porto de Santo Antônio to Cacimba do Padre.

This project is part of a larger agreement for shared management of the island, which was ratified by Brazil's Supreme Court in March 2023. In addition to the rules being established through this initiative, other beaches within the Marine National Park, such as Sancho and Leão, will continue to follow guidelines set by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). The alignment of local governance with existing federal regulations is essential for maintaining the ecological integrity and sustainable use of the island's natural resources.

João Luiz Nicolodi, the general coordinator of Coastal and Marine Management at the Ministry of the Environment, emphasized the importance of community input in these discussions, highlighting potential actions that could be adopted to ensure that both ecological health and local interests are balanced in the management of Fernando de Noronha’s coastal areas. The initiative underscores the critical role of local stakeholders in the sustainable development of the island’s vibrant coastline.
