Contract signed for delivery of anti-ship missile systems to Latvia worth 39 million euros
The US Navy has signed a contract worth approximately 39 million euros with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for the delivery of anti-ship missile systems to Latvia.
In early March, the US Navy finalized a contract amounting to 39.069 million euros with Norwegian defense firm Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for the supply of anti-ship missile systems to Latvia. This contract is part of a larger agreement between Latvia and the US, originally signed in 2023, which totals 105.5 million USD (approximately 91.161 million euros). A significant chunk of this agreement, specifically 45.5 million USD, is allocated for the procurement of the missile systems, while the remainder is designated for implementation and maintenance of the system over the next two years, including aspects such as training, spare parts, technical documentation, software, and technical support.
The Latvian Ministry of Defense has indicated that the majority of the work related to this project will be carried out in Kongsberg, Norway. The anti-ship missile coastal defense system will consist of a land-based installation including Kongsberg’s fire control center, launching equipment, and integrated maritime targeting capabilities to enhance Latvia's defensive posture. With the US covering 70% of the total costs, this contract marks a crucial step forward in strengthening Latvia’s military capabilities in response to increased regional security challenges.
Overall, this agreement signifies a robust collaboration between Latvia and the US in defense matters, reinforcing bilateral ties and contributing to the broader efforts to secure the Baltic region against potential threats. As tensions escalate in Eastern Europe, such agreements are vital for NATO allies like Latvia to bolster their defense mechanisms and assure their sovereignty.
