Semeņistaja Debuts in the 'WTA 1000' Main Draw with a Loss
Latvian tennis player Darja Semeņistaja suffered a first-round defeat at the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami.
Latvian tennis player Darja Semeņistaja made her debut in the main draw of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami but unfortunately lost in the first round. Competing as a 'lucky loser' after previously losing in qualification, she faced Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, ranked 44th in the WTA rankings, and was defeated with a score of 4-6, 1-6. This debut, while disappointing, still allows her to earn 20 WTA ranking points from the qualifications, which will help her stay in the top hundred of the online rankings.
In her journey to the main draw, Semeņistaja was seeded 11th in the qualification rounds, where she had a strong first match winning against American Monica Exstrand with a score of 6-0, 6-4. However, her second match proved to be challenging as she lost to Austrian Sinja Kraus, who was seeded 16th in the qualifications and won that match with a score of 6-2, 6-3. The format of entering the main draw as a 'lucky loser' has its own stipulations, and failing to progress past the first round means she can only claim the points earned from qualifying.
In related news, the top-ranked Latvian player, Aļona Ostapenko, will also be competing in the main draw, starting her matches from the second round. Ostapenko's next opponent is expected to be either Dajana Jastremska from Ukraine or American Eshlina, further drawing attention to Latvian representation in the tournament. Despite Semeņistaja's early exit, her participation at this level is a significant milestone for her career.
