Semeņistaja loses in qualifying match but still enters the main draw of the Miami tennis tournament
Darja Semeņistaja lost her qualifying match but will compete in the main event at the Miami tennis tournament after other players withdrew.
Latvian tennis player Darja Semeņistaja faced a setback in the qualifying rounds of the Miami tennis tournament, losing to Austrian Sinja Krau in straight sets, 2-6, 3-6. Despite this defeat, Semeņistaja was granted entry into the main draw due to withdrawals from four other players, allowing her a rare chance to compete in a 1000-point tournament for the first time. In her upcoming first-round match, she is set to face Italian player Elisabetta Cocciaretto, currently ranked 44 in the WTA. Should Semeņistaja win, she will advance to face one of the tournament favorites, American Coco Gauff, in the second round.
Previously, Semeņistaja had a successful qualifying round where she achieved victory against American Monica Ekstrand, who received a special invitation to the tournament despite being ranked 366th. Semeņistaja’s current WTA ranking is 103, marking significant progress in her career. This Miami tournament also features another Latvian player, Jelena Ostapenko, who will begin her campaign in the second round as the 25th seed, challenging Ukrainian Dajana Jastremska.
