A 40-year-old man was arrested for extorting an 85-year-old woman in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, under the guise of selling trash bags.

In Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, an 85-year-old woman fell victim to extortion, fraud, and threats from a 40-year-old man who had been exploiting her over several months. The man's initial approach involved selling trash bags, which allowed him to gain the elderly woman's trust. However, he soon manipulated her emotional kindness, requesting increasing amounts of money under the pretense of financial hardships.

The extortion began in August 2025, with the man regularly visiting the woman's home and gradually increasing the sums he requested, from small amounts like R$ 20 to R$ 50. Concerned for his welfare, the elderly woman complied, but as the interaction progressed, his tactics escalated to more dubious stories aimed at extracting larger amounts, ultimately resulting in financial damage estimated at R$ 10,000. The community began to notice the suspicious activities surrounding the woman.

On March 18, 2026, the suspect was finally apprehended by local residents when he was caught in front of the victim's home. The police were notified, and a formal report was filed at the Participative Police Delegation. This case highlights the vulnerability of elderly individuals to fraudulent schemes and may prompt discussions on protective measures and the necessity of community vigilance against such predatory practices.
