Danone recalls Aptamil formula due to toxin presence; see affected batches

Danone Brazil has announced a recall of three batches of Aptamil Premium 1 infant formula due to the presence of a toxin linked to bacteria.

On Thursday, Danone Brazil confirmed a recall of three batches of Aptamil Premium 1 infant formula aimed at infants up to six months old. This recall follows the identification of cereulide toxin, produced by the bacteria Bacillus cereus, in tests conducted by the manufacturer. The Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA) highlighted that this is part of a broader issue, as similar recalls occurred previously in Europe, where Danone had already removed products for the same reason.

The toxin associated with this recall was also linked to a January incident involving 33 batches of various infant products from NestlΓ©, related to contaminated ingredients sourced from a Chinese supplier. This raises concerns regarding the safety of infant formulas manufactured across multiple brands, including Lactalis, that may share common ingredients. Specifically, the three batches of Aptamil affected were reportedly sold only in the year 2025, and Danone has indicated that internal controls suggest these products have largely been consumed.

Danone has characterized this recall as voluntary and preventive, prompted by recent international developments regarding the detection of cereulide. The company stresses the importance of consumer safety and is taking proactive measures in light of the evolving situation. The recall emphasizes the need for close monitoring of food safety practices in the production of infant formulas and raises awareness for parents regarding the products they choose for their infants.
