Anvisa suspends batches of Aptamil infant formula after detection of toxin

The Brazilian health agency Anvisa has suspended the sale, distribution, and use of three specific batches of Aptamil infant formula after the detection of a toxin.

The Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) recently mandated the suspension of sales, distribution, and use of three batches of Aptamil Premium 1 infant formula (800g) due to the discovery of a toxin in the product. This decision is documented in Resolution-RE No. 1,056, published in the Official Gazette of the Union. The measure comes after the manufacturer, Danone Ltda., voluntarily recalled the batches in light of the finding of cereulide, a toxin that can pose health risks, in the liquid form of the prepared product.

The affected batches include specific identifiers: Batch 2026.09.09, manufactured on March 10, 2025; Batch 2026.10.03, manufactured on April 3, 2025; and Batch 2026.09.07, manufactured on March 8, 2025. Anvisa has instructed that these products should not be sold or used until further evaluation is conducted, raising concerns about consumer safety and food quality in Brazil.

Cereulide is a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria and is commonly associated with foodborne illnesses. The detection of such a toxin in a widely used infant formula underscores the importance of stringent safety protocols in food production and monitoring. This incident illustrates not only the responsibility of manufacturers to ensure product safety but also the role of health authorities in protecting public health by swiftly addressing potential risks.
