On Wednesday, May 18, a dentist in Brumado, located in the southwest of Bahia, Brazil, was arrested in a police sting operation after she delivered drugs concealed within a gauze package to a prisoner. The local police reported that the dentist had been under surveillance for some time, indicating that she was suspected of attempting to smuggle illegal substances into the correctional facility. During a scheduled dental appointment with one of the inmates, she presented him with the gauze package, which he was instructed to pass on to another inmate.

Law enforcement officials discovered approximately 19 grams of a substance resembling marijuana and 11 grams of a substance resembling cocaine within the gauze. The investigation revealed that the inmate who received the package was unaware of the illicit contents and was merely acting as an intermediary. This indicates a larger issue within the system, where inmates might be exploited unknowingly in drug smuggling operations.

Additional information suggests that the dentist was able to bypass certain security measures typically in place because she was undergoing cancer treatment and was not required to undergo a BodyScan examination when entering the prison.
