Using drop boxes to file taxes? The CRA is getting rid of them soon
The Canada Revenue Agency will discontinue the use of tax drop boxes across Canada after this tax season due to a significant decrease in usage and security concerns.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced that it will eliminate the use of drop boxes for tax filing and payments following the current tax season. Currently, there are 45 active drop boxes throughout Canada where taxpayers can submit tax returns, payments, and other necessary documents. However, the CRA has reported a drastic decline in usage, with submissions through these boxes falling by 78% over the past six years, resulting in only about 430,000 items for the 2024-2025 tax period.
In addition to the decline in usage, the CRA cited concerns regarding processing delays and security issues linked to the drop boxes. Reports of vandalism and break-ins have raised questions about the safety of submitted documents, prompting the agency to rethink their utility. As a part of the transition, the CRA has stated that the final day for documents to be accepted via drop boxes will be May 28, after which taxpayers will need to utilize alternate methods such as electronic filing, mailing documents, or making payments in person at Canada Post locations.
With the 2025 tax season already underway, which is scheduled to close on April 30 for most individual filers, Canadians will have to adapt to these changes rapidly. The shift is part of a broader move towards digitization in the tax filing process, reflecting changing behaviors among taxpayers who are increasingly opting for electronic methods over traditional drop box submissions.
