"Strange conversations" of Sebastian M. in detention. Ministry: "The prosecutor is obliged to take action"

Sebastian M. claims he was not responsible for a fatal accident and has had his phone privileges revoked due to concerns he might flee the country.

The court hearing last week was the first in which Sebastian M. presented his explanation regarding the tragic accident on highway A1, where he is alleged to have been driving excessively fast. He insisted that he was not the one who caused the accident, attributing blame to a Kia driver who supposedly cut him off and asserted that he was driving at a maximum speed of 200 km/h rather than the over 300 km/h estimated by experts. His defense has repeatedly tried to introduce the theory that the Kia was traveling at highway speeds on an access road, a claim that the prosecution argues lacks any supporting evidence.

During the proceedings, M.'s defense team submitted a motion for his release from custody, where he has been held since his extradition to Poland in May 2025. However, in a surprising turn, prosecutor Aleksander Duda revealed a concerning new element related to the case. He stated that the granted permission for phone calls was misused by M., as it indicated potential intentions to flee the country once released, creating significant challenges for the ongoing proceedings.

The prosecutor's comments led to the revocation of M.'s phone privileges, highlighting the risks associated with his potential release. The prosecution is now faced with the responsibility to take further action in response to these revelations, underlining both the serious implications of M.'s case and the legal obligations of law enforcement to ensure he remains in Polish jurisdiction as the trial continues.
