Accident on the A1. Sebastian M. does not admit to guilt. What did he say before the court?
Sebastian M., a businessman accused of causing a tragic car accident on the A1 highway, denies responsibility despite a prosecutor's assertion of his high-speed driving leading to the incident that killed a family.
A tragic car accident occurred on the A1 highway in Sierosław, near Piotrków Trybunalski, on September 16, 2023, resulting in the deaths of a young couple and their four-year-old son from Myszków. The prosecution claims that 34-year-old businessman Sebastian M. was the sole perpetrator, having driven his BMW at speeds between 315 and 320 km/h just before colliding with a Kia driven by a three-person family. The impact caused the Kia to crash into energy-absorbing barriers, eventually catching fire. Sebastian M.'s car reportedly came to a halt around 200 meters from the crash site.
Sebastian M. was not detained immediately following the accident. In August 2024, reports emerged that the police in Piotrków Trybunalski initially accepted M.'s account, which shifted blame to the victims. Until early the next morning, the police database identified the Kia driver as the culprit. It was not until around 6:26 AM that the police system updated to reflect Sebastian M. as the alleged responsible party.
The case highlights serious concerns about accountability in high-speed driving incidents and the initial police response, which allowed the narrative from the accused to dominate. As the legal proceedings unfold, the implications for road safety and law enforcement practices in Poland are significant, drawing public attention to the importance of thorough investigations in such tragic events.
