After 13 years of delay - now the tracks in Sundbyberg will be underground
Construction to bury the rail tracks in Sundbyberg, Sweden, is set to begin in May, with the project expected to be completed by 2042 after significant delays.
In Sundbyberg, Sweden, a long-awaited construction project to bury the railway tracks is set to begin preparations in May 2023, with promises that the tracks will be underground by 2042. According to Erik Lundman, the project manager at Trafikverket, the central area of Sundbyberg presents the largest challenge in the entire Mälarbanan railway project. The significant delay of 13 years has been attributed to urban congestion, which was underestimated during initial planning phases.
The project will involve a year-long suspension of vehicle traffic on sections of Järnvägsgatan and Esplanaden, although pedestrians and cyclists will still have access. Lundman explained that the first phase of the project involves relocating utility lines for electricity, water, and telecommunications, which will lay the groundwork for the major construction activities to follow. This preparatory work is expected to last for a year and is crucial for ensuring the project's success.
Residents along Järnvägsgatan may face considerable noise disruptions during the construction period, prompting Trafikverket to offer temporary hotel accommodations for those affected. The completion of this infrastructure project, which has long been needed for improved transportation in the area, is anticipated by August 2042, representing a significant milestone for the town and its commuters.
