The court imposed a fine of 5,000 euros on a person who illegally dismantled old cars for five years

A Lithuanian court has fined an individual €5,000 for illegally dismantling vehicles over a five-year period.

A court in Lithuania has recently ruled in a case regarding an individual who systematically dismantled old vehicles without the necessary permits from the start of 2017 until March 2022. This unlawful activity came under scrutiny when authorities in Šiauliai initiated an investigation due to potential environmental violations linked to the illegal dismantling and waste management of vehicles in the Pakruojis district. The person was found to have purchased used vehicles, dismantled them, and sold over 135 tons of metal scraps for profit, amounting to more than €36,000 in revenue during this time.

The investigation by the State Environmental Protection Service highlighted significant lapses in compliance with environmental regulations, as the individual conducted their operations without registering a business or obtaining the required licenses. This lack of adherence to regulations not only posed environmental risks but also undermined legitimate businesses operating within the automotive recycling sector. The court's decision to impose a fine reflects the seriousness with which Lithuania is approaching illegal environmental activities, aiming to deter similar offenses in the future.

The case raises broader implications concerning the enforcement of environmental laws in Lithuania, particularly as the government continues to grapple with illegal waste management and recycling practices. By addressing such violations through penalties, authorities are sending a clear message to both individuals and businesses that compliance with environmental regulations is mandatory. This stance progressively contributes to enhancing the integrity of the sector, ensuring that operational standards are met for the benefit of public health and the environment.
