Convicted of corruption, son of former governor of MT will have to wear an electronic bracelet
Rodrigo da Cunha Barbosa, son of the former governor of Mato Grosso, will wear an electronic bracelet as part of his sentence for corruption and organized crime.
Rodrigo da Cunha Barbosa, a physician and son of former Mato Grosso governor Silval Barbosa, has been sentenced to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet as he serves part of his sentence for passive corruption and participation in organized crime. This decision was made by Judge MΓ΄nica Catarina Perri on the 4th of this month, following the legal proceedings that have characterized Rodrigo's case since his conviction in 2016.
Initially sentenced to 9 years, 4 months, and 27 days in semi-open detention, his defense is contesting the sentence, claiming miscalculation of the penalty that they argue should be 6 years and 27 days instead. They also cite a plea bargain made with the Attorney General's Office in 2017, which was approved by the Supreme Federal Court, claiming that this should allow him to serve his sentence in a more lenient open regime.
Judge Perri rejected these arguments, clarifying that the plea deal requires the sentence to be served in two phases, with the first phase demanding two years in a semi-open regime. This ruling highlights the ongoing legal complexities surrounding his case and the serious implications of corruption within political families in Brazil, as public trust in governance continues to be a significant concern for many citizens.
