The Seimas will consider a proposal to apply criminal liability for diversion
The Lithuanian Seimas is discussing a proposal to introduce criminal penalties for acts of diversion that harm national interests.
In response to increasing threats to Lithuania's national security, the Seimas is evaluating a legislative proposal aimed at introducing criminal responsibility for acts of diversion. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Justice Martynas Dobrovolskis during a recent parliamentary session, where he highlighted various incidents, including damage to critical cable infrastructure, that illustrate the need for stronger legal frameworks to address potential actions undermining Lithuania's national interests.
The proposed amendments to the Criminal Code target acts that result in the destruction or damage of infrastructure deemed vital to national security, with penalties including imprisonment for up to eight years. The proposal saw unanimous support among lawmakers, with 101 votes in favor and one abstention, indicating a broad consensus on the issue's urgency. The next steps include further review by the Parliament’s Law and Order Committee before any implementation.
This legislative initiative reflects growing concerns about foreign intelligence activities and the potential for sabotage that could affect Lithuania's security landscape. As the geopolitical climate intensifies, Lithuania is taking proactive measures to protect its national interests, which may also set a precedent for other nations facing similar threats from abroad.
