R. Tamašunienė: proposals to criminalize sabotage acts are also related to damage to infrastructure in the Baltic Sea
R. Tamašunienė announced proposals to criminalize acts of sabotage during a press conference, emphasizing the need for legal adjustments in response to recent incidents affecting national security infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
During a press conference held by the Government, R. Tamašunienė highlighted the inadequacy of current legal regulations regarding acts that damage or threaten national security infrastructure. She pointed out that existing provisions in the Penal Code do not effectively address the seriousness of such actions and their implications for national security. Tamašunienė stressed that there is an urgent need for reforms to ensure that acts of sabotage are treated with appropriate legal gravity.
She cited recent incidents in the Baltic Sea where underwater cables and pipelines were damaged, showcasing the real threat posed by such acts to Lithuania’s critical infrastructure. The proposed changes aim to criminalize these types of actions more comprehensively, recognizing their potential to endanger national security and the stability of essential services. The Minister underlined that without proper legal tools, accountability for such infractions could remain elusive, jeopardizing national interests.
Tamašunienė's assertions come at a time when there is heightened awareness of threats to critical infrastructure in strategic areas such as the Baltic Sea. The move to amend the Penal Code reflects a proactive approach by the Lithuanian government to address emerging security challenges and ensure that existing laws can appropriately respond to various forms of sabotage, which are increasingly relevant in today's geopolitical climate.
